A Tale of Two Starts: Lowry Shines, McIlroy Stumbles in Dubai!
Talk about a rollercoaster! As the Dubai Desert Classic kicked off on Thursday, January 22, 2026, Irish golfer Shane Lowry showed incredible resilience, bouncing back from a heartbreaking finish last weekend with a solid opening round. Meanwhile, golf superstar Rory McIlroy found himself in a bit of a pickle, struggling to find his rhythm.
Lowry's Comeback Spirit:
Just days after a devastating stumble on the 72nd hole at Dubai Creek Resort, Shane Lowry proved he's a force to be reckoned with. He carded a two-under par 70 at Emirates GC, a respectable score on a day where the course proved quite challenging for many. Lowry, who started his round on the 10th hole, showcased his skill by sinking birdies on par-five holes at both the beginning and end of his front nine. He also drained a fantastic 17-foot putt for birdie on the par-four 14th. However, it wasn't all smooth sailing. He dropped shots on the 12th, due to an errant approach shot, and the 16th, following a loose drive. He briefly reached two-under after a great bunker shot on the par-five third, but a quick three-putt on the fourth hole saw him give a stroke back.
A Most Unorthodox Shot!
Things got interesting on the fifth hole when a wild tee shot sent Lowry's ball careening down the cart path! This left him with a rather unconventional shot from less than 100 yards away on a 450-yard par-four. Despite the tricky lie, he managed to get his wedge to within 11 feet of the pin, though the birdie putt ultimately lipped out. But Lowry wasn't done yet! On the eighth, he found the heart of the green from a greenside bunker and then sank a crucial 24-foot putt for birdie. He's currently sitting in a strong tied-eighth position, four shots behind the early leader, Francesco Molinari.
McIlroy's Uphill Battle:
On the other side of the leaderboard, Rory McIlroy, a four-time champion of this very event, had a much tougher opening. He finished his round with a one-over par 73, placing him further back in the pack. A significant blow came on the 18th hole (his ninth of the day), where he recorded a double-bogey seven. Despite trying to avoid the water by laying up from the rough, his approach shot landed short and rolled back into the hazard. This costly mistake put him at two-over par by the turn.
Fighting Back, But Not Enough:
McIlroy managed to claw his way back to even par with birdies on the par-five third and the sixth hole, the latter featuring a stunning approach shot that left him a tap-in. However, another errant tee shot on the short seventh hole resulted in another dropped stroke. He also missed an opportunity to capitalize on a birdie chance on the ninth, sending a six-foot putt just past the hole. His playing partners, Tyrrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood, posted rounds of 70 and 73 respectively.
Afternoon Starters:
We're still keeping an eye on Padraig Harrington and Tom McKibbin, who are among the afternoon starters. Harrington is currently at one-under after a birdie on the second, while McKibbin is at one-over. Play is ongoing!
What do you think? Is Shane Lowry's early success a sign of things to come, or will McIlroy stage a dramatic comeback? And is it fair to say that a single hole can truly derail a player's entire tournament? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
