In a move that's shaking up college football, BYU's defensive mastermind is heading to greener pastures—and fans are left wondering how the Cougars will fill the void.
Provo, Utah—BYU football head coach Kalani Sitake is on the hunt for a fresh defensive coordinator after a big change in his coaching staff. Just last Friday, it was confirmed that Jay Hill has taken the role of defensive coordinator under Kyle Whittingham at Michigan.
Hill's departure from BYU comes after he helped steer two of the team's top defensive units, both ranking in the Top 25 for scoring defense. Beyond just calling plays on defense, Hill also served as Sitake's right-hand man as associate head coach, making him a cornerstone of the program's strategy.
But here's where it gets controversial: Is this a step up for Hill, or a loss that could derail BYU's recent momentum? Some fans might argue that Michigan's big-time spotlight could tempt any coach, but does that make it right to leave a team on the rise?
Shortly after the news broke, Sitake—who just inked a long-term deal to stay at BYU's helm—released a statement about Hill's exit:
"I want to express my sincere appreciation to Jay Hill for all he’s done for BYU football over the last three years. He’s a great coach and I wish him the best in his new endeavor. Our football program is in a great place as we look to build on the success of the past two seasons with all the talent we have returning in 2026.
“I’m excited about the collaborative efforts of our defensive coaches over the past few years and the momentum we have been building as a staff.
“We have a lot of quality coaches in our program and I’m proud of their efforts. We’ll make the necessary staff adjustments soon, as we continue to find ways to help our players improve and elevate the success of BYU football."

Looking ahead, BYU football is geared up to keep advancing. Sitake's leadership has already made BYU the most victorious team in the Big 12 during its 16-team expansion, racking up 23 wins over the last two seasons. And this past year, in 2025, they wrapped up with a solid 12-2 record, capped off by a bowl victory against No. 22 Georgia Tech in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. It's impressive stuff, especially for newcomers to college football, where a defensive coordinator is basically the brains behind stopping the opponent's scoring plays—think of them as the team's shield in action.
Now, with Hill gone, Sitake faces the task of bringing in a new defensive coordinator. This will mark the third one during his tenure at BYU, which started back in 2016. And this is the part most people miss: Coaching changes like this can spark debates about loyalty versus ambition.
