In the world of college football, the spotlight often shines brightest on the quarterback position. And when it comes to Michigan Wolverines' signal-caller Bryce Underwood, the expectations were sky-high from the get-go. Standing at an imposing 6'4" and with an impressive high school record, Underwood arrived in Ann Arbor with a hefty price tag and a reputation as the top recruit in the nation. However, his first season with the Wolverines didn't quite live up to the hype.
The numbers tell a story of inconsistency. While Underwood threw for over 2,000 yards and rushed for nearly 400, his completion percentage was just over 60%, and he threw almost as many interceptions as touchdowns. But what many people don't realize is that Underwood's struggles weren't entirely his fault. The team's receiving corps dropped passes at an alarming rate, and the offensive line was plagued by injuries, forcing constant shifts.
"It's easy to point fingers at the quarterback when things aren't going well," I often say. "But in Underwood's case, there were mitigating factors."
Underwood himself seems to have taken last season as a learning experience. Rather than making excuses, he's using it as motivation to improve. And with a new coaching staff, including noted quarterback coach Jordan Palmer, he's working on every aspect of his game.
"The key for Underwood is decisiveness," I believe. "He needs to trust his instincts and make quick, accurate decisions. With a better supporting cast and a refined approach, I think we'll see a much-improved version of Underwood in 2026."
The new coaching staff, led by former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham, seems determined to bring out the best in Underwood. They've implemented a system that utilizes his unique skills while also providing a more balanced offensive approach.
"Underwood is a special talent," says Whittingham. "He's a runner, but we can't rely on that alone. We need to open up the passing game and give him the tools to succeed."
The running back, Jordan Marshall, echoes this sentiment. "Bryce is a freak athlete," he says. "We need to let him be himself and not bottle up his abilities."
As we look ahead to the 2026 season, the pressure is on for Underwood to deliver. With a tougher schedule and higher expectations, he'll need to step up his game. But with the right support and a fresh start, I believe he has the potential to lead the Wolverines to success.
"It's all about growth and development," I conclude. "Underwood has the tools, and now it's up to him and his coaches to put it all together. I, for one, am excited to see what he can do."
