NHS breast cancer service has taken action after failings found, but more delays are expected.
The County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust has apologised for systematic failings at its breast cancer service, which were uncovered in a report in November. The report found unnecessary surgeries, missed cancers, and poor standards of care at the University Hospital of North Durham and Darlington Memorial Hospital. The trust has since taken significant action to address these issues, including installing additional equipment to reduce unnecessary further operations and implementing longer patient appointments to offer compassionate care.
However, the trust has also temporarily reduced the number of patients it sees each week, compared with levels recorded before March 2025. This reduction is a response to the delays caused by the initial failings, as the trust works to collaborate on a sustainable model of care that provides timely treatment. The trust remains committed to listening to patients' experiences and ensuring they receive the support they need.
Despite the progress made, more delays are expected as the trust continues to investigate hundreds of cases and work towards a safe and sustainable care model. The trust has invited patients to share their experiences and suggestions, and has expressed its apologies for the delays and the initial failings.
